Together for Tavolara

Mine Vaganti NGO, in collaboration with the Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, coordinated a project supported by Fondazione con Il Sud, “Together for Tavolara”, with a network of 10 Italian partners highly specialized in the education and research, environmental protection and sailing.

The partners involved in the project: the Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area; Slow Dive Association; Centro Nautico Levante; Reef Check; ITCG Attilio Deffenu of Olbia; Be The Change; University of Sassari; Municipality of Olbia; Municipality of Loiri – Porto San Paolo and the Municipality of San Teodoro.

The project is supported by Fondazione con il Sud, a private non-profit body that promotes the social development of the South of Italy, the protection of the environment and the enhancement of common goods.

“Together for Tavolara” was funded under the 2015 Environment Call, through Fondazione con Il Sud renewed its commitment to the protection and enhancement of environmental heritage in the southern territories.

The solid collaboration between Mine Vaganti NGO and AMP Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo was born in 2012 when MVNGO meets the consolidated Management Consortium of the AMP Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo and launches a series of programs focused on environmental protection. This led to the creation of a project focused on the protection of the natural beauties of the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo through citizen science, raising awareness among students and fans of scuba diving on issues relating to alien species and involving them in data collection and in the monitoring of the species present in the park. Together, they then created a local network by building a consortium of 10 partners who presented the project proposal.

The architrave of the project is represented by the concept of “Citizen Science”, which the Oxford Dictionary defines as “The collection and analysis of data by an audience, which takes part in a project in collaboration with professional scientists”.

“Together for Tavolara” has brought active citizenship actions and environmental awareness activities to the Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area. The 2-year project was based on marine and land activities aimed at involving the students of the ITCG Attilio Deffenu of Olbia, the students of the University of Sassari and the entire population of the surrounding area. The lines of intervention were 4:

– non-formal education on issues related to environmental protection;

– underwater and snorkelling activities;

– ground activities;

– data collection and analysis.

The monitoring activities at sea took place from June to October 2016, the monitoring activities of the coastal areas will take place in the spring-summer 2017.
